Before the Music Dies – An Ominous Review

Ok, “ominous” may seem strong, but certainly its warranted if you’re a fan of music. As music becomes less of an art form and more of a commodity, we’re reaching a point where “pop culture” trumps creativity, and begs the question: Where has the music gone?

So, what brought all this on? I recently watched a documentary titled “Before the Music Dies,” (2006 - Andrew Shapter & Joel Rasmussen). Narrated by Forest Whitaker, and featuring interviews such musical luminaries as Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitte, and Dave Mathews, “B4MD” explores the decline of the music industry in terms of providing original, creative material, and instead offering nothing more than “pop pap.”

Branford Marsalis, also featured in the film, sums it up succinctly; “The reality is that superficiality is in - and depth and quality is kind of out."
